DPH MATH COMPETITION Background: The National Primary Schools’ Mathematics Competition has become a household name in primary schools and in communities across Jamaica. Every year, hundreds of children from all 14 parishes in the island hone their skills to achieve the ultimate prize - the National Primary Schools Math Champion. The competition began in 1992, and was sponsored for the first time in 2007 by DPH. DPH is a brand of Federated Pharmaceutical, a subsidiary of Lascelles Limited, which is a member of the Lascelles de Mercado Group. The competition continues to strive to promote excellence in mathematics and it also offers the company a unique marketing opportunity. Each year, over 200 schools from across the island enter the competition. The Champions over the years have gone on to excel in their studies and their various professions. The current Rhodes Scholar Michael Waul, formerly of Marlie Mount Primary, was the 1998 champion. The competition positions the sponsors as a good corporate citizen involved in a national education initiative. 2009 Competition The 2009 competition will be held on
Math Teachers Workshops DPH also holds an annual series of workshops for primary school math teachers, in order to develop and enhance competencies in the subject. The workshops are held in conjunction with the Ministry of Education. In 2009, the workshops will be held in St. Mary, Clarendon and Westmoreland.
Rationale of Competition & Workshops The main purpose of the DPH National Math Competition and the Teacher’s Workshops is to promote excellence in mathematics at the primary level. Statistics continue to show that math is one of the problem areas in Jamaica’s education system, with less than desired passes in both the GSAT and CXC examinations. DPH believes that its contribution to the development of a culture of excellence in the subject at the primary level, will go a far way in helping Jamaican students to improve their results in high school. This excellence in math is desired for Jamaica to maximise our potential in all sectors of the economy as math is a base subject for almost any career.
